After a relaxed morning we get organised and walk into Bergerac. The path takes us along the riverbank and across the River Dordogne straight into the old part of the city. Cyrano de Bergerac is celebrated in a big way in these parts even though he’s unlikely ever to have visited here.

We walk the streets of half-timbered houses and visit Église Saint-Jacques in a square in the heart of the medieval part of the city. This church was built in the 12th century as a chapel on the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela.

It is 37° here today so water and ice-cream are definitely required to cool us down.

We continue our exploration whilst doing a little toy shopping and eventually find a much bigger square and a much bigger church Notre Dame built in 1865.

Back down to the old part again for a beer hiding from the sun under multiple umbrellas but not escaping the scorching heat.

We visit Quai Cyrano, a cultural centre that houses the Tourist Office, a wine tasting area, a bar, terrace and a beautiful 17th century Cloister. I quaff a rosé and T a red both lovely local wines whilst sitting in the Cloître des Récollets, originally part of a 17th century monastery for Friars of the Franciscan order.

Back to van, opening every window before sitting outside in the shade eventually enjoying steak for dinner and a few quizzes.

An enjoyable visit to a picturesque place overlooking a fine river.
