Start our day with run 2 of week 2 of Couch to 5k this morning. We run out of the campsite to the beach and then along one of the walls of El Dueso prison reportedly the only prison left in Cantabria. It was built in 1907 on the site of a napoleonic fortress and housed many prominent prisoners during the Spanish Civil War. We actually thought it had been closed down in 2020 and couldn’t work out why there was a new door in the wall and shiny new barbed wire. Now we know.

On the road we drive for 90 minutes and stop at a supermarket before heading along the N621 which takes us through the Desfiladera de Hermida, the Gorge of Hermida. It’s Spain’s longest gorge, stretching over 21km between Cantabria and Asturias. Carved by the Deva River, this limestone gateway to the Picos de Europa mountains has 600m high cliffs and the road twists and turns as it follows the river’s path. It’s a spectacular drive!

We are staying at Camping La Viorna just outside and Potes and have a fabulous view of the Picos de Europa mountains. A very late lunch followed eventually with a game of scrabble and a BBQ. T beats me soundly. The score is 2-1 to him and I think it may only get worse.

Annoyingly the fridge is playing up which is always a worry. We flick between gas and electric but it appears to be getting warmer.
Our first DVD of the holiday to end the day is The Devil Wears Prada. Stanley Tucci is a funny guy and a fab actor and it has a stellar cast. Definitely stood the test of time.
A spectacular drive kind of day.
