Potes, Cantabria

A rather stressful start to our day as we wake up to a fridge that is definitely not working. Thermometer says 16°C. I consult the guru that is ChatGPT and we check out various suggestions including taking off the outside vents and switching everything off. Nothing works. We didn’t use ramps to level the van when we arrived yesterday as we didn’t think it was too bad so we try that too but just can’t get the van absolutely level with them. The site is terraced and the pitches are wide enough but not very long. We fit but there isn’t loads of wriggle room. So we move pitch. Across the way a few spots up. Easier to get into and a more level starting position so definitely better than our last spot especially on the ramps. The other issue we notice is that the power to the pitch has its polarity reversed and the live and neutral cables are swapped. We have a gadget to check this and an extra small cable we fit to fix it. Result! The fridge is working again, the temp has finally started dropping helped further by a big bag of ice in the fridge section to speed up the cooling. I throw quite a few things out to avoid food poisoning but hopefully we can save the meat we bought yesterday. It’s temporarily in the freezer compartment whilst the fridge gets a chance to cool down.

More laundry done by T this time and then late afternoon we walk into Potes. It’s a 25 minute stroll down the hill.

It’s rather gorgeous with its medieval old town, cobbled streets and bridges. There’s a church to visit and a 15th century tower to see. We buy a couple of souvenirs and quaff a cold beer.

We continue to wander up around and find a bar with a glass balcony high over the river with fabulous views. It really is an incredibly pretty place. A definite must visit if you are in the area.

What a view!

Back up the hill to the campsite and a meal in the restaurant where T orders a bottle of El Coto red wine for €8. A bargain. A lovely end to a day that started poorly but improved tremendously.

A highlight of our trip so far.
