After a quick top up shop in Aldi we drive to Burgos. Arriving mid afternoon we bag the last spot in a free motorhome park up.
We take the free bus into the city. It’s free because there was a huge fire in the bus depot destroying most buses so they’ve loaned some from Madrid and they’re not set up for local payments. Works for us.
A stroll along the River Arlanzón on the Paseo del Espolón, a charming ramblas, takes us to the cathedral and historic city centre. The ramblas is lined with topiary and ancient plane trees that provide an umbrella like shade over the cafes and restaurants.
The gates and archways to the cathedral are ancient and the cathedral itself is monumental. According to UNESCO it’s a masterpiece of Spanish gothic architecture. Built between the 13th and 16th centuries it has 19 different chapels varying wildly in scale and design. The grandest is Capilla de los Condestables which is an elaborate tomb with a star shaped dome ceiling. The Constable is basically the King of Castile’s number two so building this definitely guaranteed them a permanent place in history of Burgos!
Onto a bar for tapas and cold beer with a view!
We wander around to the other side of the cathedral and it’s probably the front!
Onto another bar where we enjoy a mixed tapas plate before wandering back down the ramblas which is now heaving with people enjoying a sunny Friday evening. We find Plaza Mayor and enjoy another drink.
On the way back we enjoy a drink in a bar outside the Museo de la Evolucion Humana before catching the bus.
Another little stop in a local bar two minutes from the van to end our day in Burgos.
A medieval monumental day with a side of cold beer and tapas.
