Leicester

Up and about earlier than usual today to catch the bus into Melton Mowbray and then take a train into Leicester.

As we wander towards our first stop at Leicester cathedral, after passing a Hindu temple, we enjoy the noise from a large group of drummers entertaining a crowd at Haymarket Memorial Tower. Before our visit we sit in the sunshine and enjoy tea and cake from the cafe in a Buddhist Meditation centre literally opposite the cathedral.

The Clock Tower and very noisy drum band

We enjoy our cathedral visit very much especially the intriguing Richard III story. After being discovered buried under a car park in the town he was re buried in the Cathedral in 2015.

Our next stop is The Richard III visitors centre where we enjoy the interactive exhibits telling the story of his life, death and the discovery of his grave 500 years later.

The Jewry Wall is next, the only above ground evidence of the Roman town of Ratae Corieltauvorum. It’s one of the tallest surviving sections of Roman masonry in Britain, the wall of a bath-house complex over 9 metres high and dates from about AD 160. The recently reopened and revamped museum is interesting and fun especially the video presentation at the beginning of the visit.

Just next to the Jewry Wall is St Nicholas’s Church which we wander around before enjoying a couple of drinks from the very busy Wygston’s House bar sitting in the sunshine in Jubilee Square.

T is a huge curry fan and Leicester is a curry mecca so we have a very interesting meal in a Halal restaurant called Peara before heading for the train. Never seen or tasted a Poppadom quite like it!

Back in Melton Mowbray we enjoy a couple of drinks before heading back to the van and a bit of TV.

A day full with history and sunshine. Leicester did not disappoint.
