Esbjerg, Fanø Island and Ribe

It’s a short drive from Ølgod to Esbjerg Port. The port is chock full of tanks and armoured cars which after a bit of googling we discover is because it’s a NATO maritime hub. We spend a good twenty minutes trying to find a car park near the ferry where we won’t get a fine and end up using park4night and finding a free spot close by. Should have done that in the first place!

It’s a very short cycle ride to the ferry terminal where we get the next boat to the island of Fanø in The Wadden Sea. Twelve minutes later and we have arrived at the village of Nordby passing a couple of offshore drilling rigs under repair.

Annoyingly my e-bike that was working is now kaput again. We park the bikes and go for a walk instead. We eat our sandwiches overlooking the straight between the island and the mainland and then wander back into the village.

Nordby is definitely as charming as promised with unusual thatched cottages and gardens in full bloom. It has a touch of Hobbiton about it but the doors are square not round.

We discover a glassmaker’s workshop with beautiful colourful glassware so I treat myself to a couple of candlesticks as reminders of the holiday.

On the seafront there’s a flood post showing the height of the water and the year. 1981 was a bad one! The village itself is surrounded by sea defences with a large grassy dyke and multiple flood gates.

T gets excited when we see a ship named Everten Rebekka. So close…

We also see a group of seals sunbathing on the sand flats in front of the promenade.

Time to return so we get back on the ferry and then drive to Ribe which is thirty minutes south of Esbjerg. We are staying here for a couple of nights before heading south to Germany.

It’s raining again so we don’t sit outside but we do enjoy a wonderful sunset.

An enjoyable day exploring in mostly sunshine.
