Roskilde, Zealand

Moving towards Copenhagen today still deciding whether we eventually want to take the Øresund Bridge or a ferry to cross into Sweden. However we realise via the very long journey the satnav comes up with as it’s set to no tolls, that there is another bridge we’ll need to pay a toll for much sooner, the Storebælt which is almost as expensive. After a bit of frantic googling we decide that paying cash is the cheapest way across for us but it’ll still cost £35 but better than the £74 full fee!

Once on the road we have a planned stop almost immediately at a fjord side rest area that has a basic toilet we can use to empty our van toilet cassette. This is important as we are possibly spending two nights in Roskilde on a car park. It also has a bike pump, a campfire ring and two little hutches that can be slept in for a fee of 30DKK about £3.50.

On the road again and over the bridge to Zealand the toll tries to charge us the full rate. After help from a guy on the bridge and a bit of pleading he discounts it to £40.

Once in Roskilde it’s a bit difficult to find a spot to park up as our first choice is full but eventually T susses out a good spot at the harbour. Lunch in the van before heading out to explore the town.

We have decided to give the Viking museum a miss and head for the cathedral instead. It’s a lovely walk up through a park. The outside of the building is impressive. All brick with spires, a turret and a tower.

Inside it’s quite different to our cathedrals. White walls and lots of lovely metal ironwork everywhere with soaring ceilings and arches. Lots of Danish royals buried here too.

Onto Stændertorvet which is a lovely plaza in sight of the spires of the cathedral. We sit outside enjoying the sunshine watching the world go by and quaff a pint of Carlsberg.

Next a wander through the town where all the shops are shut because its Constitution day and Father’s Day and a public holiday. We find the train station and suss out tickets before heading back towards the harbour.

It’s starts raining just as we near the park so stop at a restaurant to hide from the rain and endure a glass of truly terrible beer.

Back to the van where it’s a lot quieter now. I cook burgers for dinner and we watch GOT and start season 4 of Yellowstone.

A church and chill kind of day.
