Ladby & Kerteminde, Funen

We enjoy a cooked breakfast today and then make the return journey to the island of Funen. On our way we pass by Tranekær Slot and I manage to get a picture this time.

Our first stop is the Viking Ship museum at Ladby where we have a cuppa and a little snack before we go in. T manages to get us the senior discount without a problem.

The museum is interesting and focuses on life for Vikings around 925AD and is the only known Viking ship grave. There’s a tapestry inspired by the Bayeux tapestry which tells the history of the Ladby Viking chieftain and his ship.

Downstairs to a room with a vibrant mock-up of the ship and contents before it was buried in including the slaughtered horses and dogs!

We wander outside to the actual burial mound. The remains of the ship are in a dimly lit chamber under the mound. It’s an incredible sight. There’s an imprint of the planks and rivets that made up the ship, iron curls from the dragon-headed prow, the anchor and chain and bones of sacrificed horses and dogs. For us it’s a visceral moment that puts this on a par with Sutton Hoo.

An identical working replica of the ship has been built by volunteers using Viking building techniques. All round a fabulous museum.

Onto Keterminde where we are stopping at a car park next to a hostel for the night. There’s another van here already.

We wander into town, visit a church and do a bit of shopping before enjoying a beer in a very local smoky bar which we like.

Back to the van it’s spaghetti bolognaise followed by GOT.

A WOW sort of a day.
