Les Andelys

We moving further north and east again today to Les Andelys which lies on the banks of the River Seine.

On the way we stop at Leclerc for a few bits and pieces including a new step! When we were in Blois on the final morning our step had mysteriously disappeared from outside the van. It had been very windy and we wondered if it had blown away. Our french neighbours had an identical step sitting outside their van?? When they went out I nosied around on the way to the shower. It was definitely ours I thought. The day we landed I had taken a photo of our van with step outside and their van without a step, suspicious definitely…. mystery solved maybe.

Us with step
Our neighbours sans step!

Arriving in Les Andelys it’s raining again so setting up is wet work. Takes us a while as we need the ramps and also have to move pitches because the first one is dark under a large weeping willow tree and also very muddy underfoot.

Our usual late lunch and then a walk into the village which is only five minutes away. It’s a good location next to the River Seine but you have to pay a premium of €9 euros a night for a riverside pitch, which we don’t. There’s also an indoor and outdoor swimming pool. The campsite is absolutely packed and for the first time we see lots of UK car regs. Not our cup of tea really and expensive at €30 a night.

We enjoy the stroll along the river and very soon come across a fun fair which is here for a couple of weeks. Quiet at the moment though.

The Chateau-Gaillard that we can see above us was built on high chalk cliffs overlooking the river and the town but it’s a ruin now. It was constructed for Richard the Lionheart back in the 12th century.

A wander around the town including a look inside the church which looks like it’s ready to fall down with lots of cracks visible everywhere. Next a visit to the tourist office where we pick up a map and then a couple of beers sitting outside in a local busy bar.

Back to the van for dinner and some TV.
