Brienzersee, Brienz, Meiringen and Reichenbach Falls ….then home

Another gorgeous day today. The bad weather forecast prior to travelling has luckily proven to be inaccurate.

We walk to Interlaken Ost train station where we can catch the boat to Brienz across the lake. Paragliders are landing in the park as we pass .

Happily the boats are included with our interail ticket as everything else in Interlaken is super expensive. It’s only an hour on the busy boat which we spend sitting and standing outside on the bow enjoying the breeze and the views.

At Brienz we take a train with only five minutes to spare, to Meiringen the home of Reichenbach Falls, made famous by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The whole town has embraced Sherlock Holmes, there’s a museum and lots of hotels and businesses named after him.

We walk through the town to the funicular to take us up to the bottom of the falls. They built the funicular in 1899, eight years after the book was published and have been profiting from the fame of the famous detective ever since. It’s then many steps up up up to the top of hill to the bridge at the top and great views of the falls. Definitely worth the effort.

Down again into Meiringen for a beer before heading back to Interlaken on the train. Sessie drags us into the restaurant car where we sit at tables with linen tablecloths and enjoy fizz and beer in style with fantastic lakeside views. A fitting end to another interail day and holiday.

A quick change and then out to the pub. The Happy Inn hotel is fully booked so we find another pub called Buddy’s Bar which is cheaper and full of old bikers and customers, all friendly and happy to chat. Doner kebab again as it’s cheap and an earlyish night as we are off handy in the morning back home via a train to Geneva and planes back to Gatwick and Manchester. Switzerland is lovely.
