The Assynt region, meaning seen from afar or rocky, depending on which language you pick, is full of peaks rising from the heather, and was ruled by the Vikings 1000 years ago. Amazing scenery that would look good in Lord of the Rings or GOT. Lately we’ve been feeling like GOT extras when we see place names like the Summer Isles and Wester Ross!
We take the sensible road to Lochinver rather than the scarier and more scenic coastal one. Pass the remains of Ardveck castle and many fabulous sea lochs. Buy expensive but super tasty pies in a Lochinver pie shop.
See Suilven and the very distant Summer isles on our way to Ullapool where we stop for chips and buy a couple of candles as souvenirs. Cherry trees are blooming lovely.
Our final drive is to Poolewe on the shores of Loch Ewe. Enjoy the lochs and mountains along the way and stop at the 160ft Falls of Measach in the Corrieshalloch Gorge. You have to cross a wobbly Victorian suspension footbridge first but it’s worth it.
Night in the van re-watching GOT, now onto season 6.
