Peak District Adventure with Keith and Jacqui

Left Westhead at midday a little late, with two slightly hungover guests…..happy birthday Sandra!

Arrived at our campsite in Hayfield which is close to Kinder Scout. Set ourselves up on the pitch and then after a cuppa we decided to visit the nearest pub via a walk along the river into Hayfield. Enjoyed a couple of pints in the Sportsman pub and then back to Luci for cottage pie, far too many beers and gins but lovely, lively conversation. Had to make up both beds, a bit of a jigsaw puzzle and sometimes fun.

BBQ breakfast cooked by chef Keith, sitting outside in the sunshine. Eventually we enjoy a wonderful circular hike up via the reservoir below Kinder Scout and then up on the moors along Snake path. Great walk enjoyed by all ending back in Hayfield for a well earned pint. After a nap/snooze we walked into Hayfield for a pub crawl and bite to eat. Ended our evening with drinks in the van and the fab movie My Cousin Vinny.

Off to Carsington Water campsite this morning for our final stop in our Peak District escape, after a breakfast of champions….crumpets.  Site is lovely, set in a wood.  Keith and Tony go exploring…then Jacqui…..and I stay warm and cosy in the van having a kindle moment.

We decide to walk to the only local pub about 1.5 miles away. Along country roads, across fields avoiding cow pats and cows. Eventually arrive at the Barley Mow in Kirk Ireton. Very unusual pub, no lager, no fridges just gravity fed bitter, cider plus the odd spirit. Served by an ancient but very interesting man. Pub has officially existed since 1750…but probably been around longer. A very short list of landlords/ladies since 1750 up in the bar! Keith fell on his sword and managed 2 pints of bitter, Tony was in his element and me and Jacqui tried half a pint of cider followed by a gin and tonic….and they had ice! Unusual but enjoyable. Walked back in the dark and then cooked BBQ ….it was fun.

Final BBQ breakfast outside in the sunshine followed by a walk up to Carsington Water. Weather very kind to us again. Rambled around the island and standing stones sculpture before enjoying a pint in the sun and a bit of holiday shopping. Our final meal was a picnic of all the food we had left accompanied by drinks and another fab movie Stardust. Lovely break and Luci held up well with 4 adults !
