Beverley, Yorkshire

The skies are grey today and we wake to rain. A leisurely late breakfast before we head out around midday now the rain has stopped. Beverley Minster is our first destination and the building is lovelier on the outside as it feels strangely cramped on the inside. However we do enjoy a good long wander around. There’s a beautiful hand written war memorial and some nice stained glass.

Onto the high street which is attractive and full of what we consider a high end select of shops. We find a nice looking cafe and enjoy a cuppa and share a delicious fruity bakewell cake.

Next is St Mary’s church with its beautiful wooden painted ceilings and gorgeous stone work. We see a display of plaster model heads of ‘Women of Influence’ that were used by stonemasons as guides to carve them and they are now mounted outside on the church.

Across the road passing a restored water pump, we visit Coronation Garden a lovely tranquil green space that used to be the church’s burial ground but was transformed to commemorate the coronation of the queen in 1953.

We exit via North Bar the only remaining brick gateway into Beverley for a short wander through Westwood, a huge green area of common land dating back to the 14th century.

We stop for a couple of drinks on our way back to the van and call into M&S as we don’t fancy cooking, to pick up something easy for dinner.

T drags me back out again to the pub to watch Everton draw against Sunderland. It’s a chance to do a bit of blogging.

We’ve found Beverley an attractive and apparently affluent market town, with a well maintained town centre and housing and a vibrant music scene. Definitely worth a visit.

A enjoyable 16k steps kind of day.
