Over the Hemsedalsfjellet mountains

We’ve decided to start heading south and east towards Oslo and eventually Sweden as we need to get to Gothenburg where we plan to take a ferry back to Denmark.

Leaving Leikanger with our tent neighbours still snoozing, we drive to the ferry at Manheller crossing the Sognefjorden to Fodnes. The ferry access road is a tunnel that literally exits at the coast straight into the waiting lanes. The Norwegians really do know tunnel building.

On the other side we eventually hit Route 52 historically the shortest connection between East and West Norway over the Hemsedalsfjellet mountains.

The hairpin ascent to the top is a bit painful as we get stuck behind a line of traffic following a struggling lorry doing 20 miles an hour uphill. Eventually we can safely overtake it but a few car drivers and motor cyclists nearly have head on collisions as they’re not so patient.

There’s been a road over the Hemsedalsfjellet mountains for hundreds of years but a modern road opened in the 40’s and from the 50’s it was kept open year round. There are signs up about snow ploughs and a cabin that’s set aside for their use.

It’s a gorgeous valley above the tree line and 3661ft above sea level with lots of dinky wooden cabins and a lovely turquoise blue lake Eldrevatnet, which has a dam at one end that feeds a hydro power plant.

Eventually after a pit stop at Gol for a quick bite to eat we drive to Sutoya Camping just before Nesbyen where we treat ourselves to a proper campsite with a pitch overlooking a river.

It has an onsite restaurant so we splash the cash and enjoy a lovely meal and a beer. This is only our second evening meal of the holiday so far! The first one was in Germany on day 2. T has moose cakes and I enjoy beef. Yes wild moose, a delicacy in these parts. What a treat. It really has been difficult to eat out in Sweden and Norway as most places we’ve stayed in just don’t have restaurants in the vicinity.

A scenic day ending with a tasty treat.
