Trondheim

After a great nights sleep we dump our waste in a local free facility.

Lavanger is the northern most point of our Scandinavian adventure. This latitude 63.75° also passes through Sweden, Finland, Russia and Canada.

The drive to Trondheim is a pig of a journey with narrow and winding roads, tunnels, heavy traffic and rain for most of the way. It’s a shock to the system compared to Sweden as we’ve been used to quiet, flat and straight roads.

We are heading for a park and ride on the outskirts of the city. We get there and it’s a small section of a carpark behind a huge store. We are a bit long for it but squeeze in. Eventually after wandering out in the wrong direction we find the right bus stop and a ticket machine as you can’t buy one onboard and catch the bus into the city.

It’s a short journey into the centre. It’s raining quite hard again now so after bagging a map from an info kiosk we find a cafe that sells something other than earl grey and chai tea. We share a delicious focaccia sandwich and vanilla bun and dry off whilst we check out the map and wait for the rain to pass.

Delicious but pricy

Outside the cafe a large crowd have gathered to listen a brass band and there’s sculptures that catch our eye.

On towards the old town bridge and its iconic views of the riverfront and the colourful 18th and 19th century warehouses. We nearly visited this place as part of an interail trip a couple of years ago but our plans changed so it’s good to finally make it here.

Nidaros Domkirke next, Trondheim’s huge medieval gothic cathedral which we can’t visit inside as there’s a wedding in progress. We see two bridal parties getting photos taken outside so it must be wedding season.

Back to the square to listen to a second band and singers entertaining the Saturday shoppers before heading back to the bus stop.

On the road again for about 45 minutes to a large car park up and up and up the E39 at Orkdal. It has a feel of high moorland with lots of hiking routes around us. There’s one motorhome here and a couple of cars when we arrive. A few more arrive over the evening, one after 10pm but it’s still like day outside. No worries about driving in the dark here as it’s still bright at midnight. Chicken and chorizo for dinner.

A damp day with sunny highlights.
