Sandsbro Växjö, Småland

Looking for a bit of the great outdoors we decide to change our route and head north east to a little spot on lake Toftasjön. We’re hoping for water and trees so fingers crossed.

See lots of signs about game that appear to translate to no hunting and also game crossing here, the fence has been removed from the side of the road and there’s no barrier in the centre so we assume it’s a migration route. The image of the game looks like a moose. Google says that there are between 300k and 400k moose in the summer in Sweden but we haven’t seen any yet.

The road is mostly forested on both sides with the occasional building and very little traffic.

We drive through Sandsbro which is an attractive village with a golf course and down an ever narrowing forest road. Unluckily we meet a large van and we struggle to pass each other. Cars queue behind us but he kindly reverses so easily sorted.

Our place for the evening is a small campsite with a compost toilet. There’s another van and a couple of cars already here. We enjoy lunch and then wander out for a walk. I met a chap at the info board that said it’s a lovely three hour walk around the lake. After half an hour I’m hating it. Tree roots and rocks at every step so I feel like I’m looking permanently down at the ground with an occasional glimpse of the lake through the trees. I head back and leave T to it.

I spend the time working out where to head to whilst T finishes the walk. We’re finding it harder on this trip to find spots that we love. Too many miles to go, too much driving, weather is mostly damp and the countryside is forested and generally flat. Hopefully as we move north it’ll get more interesting.

When T returns after a couple of hours he says we started the walk in the wrong direction and that the rest of the route was much more interesting and pleasant. Oh dear.

By the evening there are two other vans parked up. Dinner in the van again watching John Snow and Ygritte flirt and meeting the White Walkers close up for the first time.

A greener day.
