Island hopping to Langeland

On our agenda today was a visit to Egeskov Castle, Europe’s best preserved Renaissance water castle. Thinking about beer prices in Norway in our near future we decide at £45 each to give it a miss. I’ve downloaded a pic though so you can see what we missed!

Instead we are doing a little Danish island hopping. We drive south east to cross into island number one Funen, the third largest island in Denmark. We intend to stop at Svendborg on the southern tip but the car park we target is out of action. It all seems a bit too busy and rushed so instead we keep going and cross the Sydfynske Øhav aka the South Funen Archipelago via the Svendborgsund bridge onto Tåsinge island. We find a spot waterside and enjoy some lunch

Next we cross the Siøsund bridge onto a third tiny island Siø which according to Wikipedia has a population of 16 and a lot of pig farms. Over the Langeland bridge is our final destination the island of Langeland and our first stop is the main town Rudkøbing. All of the islands are lush, green and filled with crops.

We park in the harbour and enjoy a wander around the attractive but slightly worn town treating ourselves to a delicious ice cream. We visit Rudkøbing church which is plain and lovely inside. Reading Wiki I discover that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who plays Jamie Lannister on Game Of Thrones was born here.

We travel north up to Dageløkke Havn the harbour we are staying at today. It’s a lovely spot overlooking the South Funen Archipelago.

We sit outside on a deck enjoying the views, sunshine and a beer. What a treat.

A lot of the harbour looks new. There’s a modern houseboat floating in the dock and a couple of speedboats tied up. Around us are loads of holiday homes and further back a static caravan site. The beach next to the harbour has a walkway into the sea and further out a floating platform so obviously this place is popular in summer.

Eventually we enjoy dinner sitting outside the van and catch the last of the rays. We hoped for a colourful sunset but the cloud now is just too thick. Head inside around 9:30 when it’s getting chilly and watch the last two episodes of GOT. Poor Ned loses his head.

A lovely day.
