Started our day with a shower conundrum as we didn’t have enough change for both of us. We decided to use what little we had in the electricity meter and shower in the van. Croissants for breakfast then off to the local Lidl to fill our van with beer and fridge with food before we cross into Denmark.

Our destination is Jelling which is important to Denmark for its connection to the royal family and its Viking history.
We endure another slight unwanted detour using coordinates in the satnav but get there eventually.
We are staying on a car park next to the museum. No services but ok for a night.

It’s raining so we have something to eat and then wait for it to pass.

The museum Kongernes Jelling celebrates the viking Kings of the 10th century in their heyday, King Gorm and his son Harold Bluetooth. Guess where Nokia got the inspiration to name its tech discovery! It’s interactive with lots of buttons to press and me and T get to enter Valhalla virtually. From the rooftop terrace we can see the lines of white posts that represent the wooden palisade of King Gorm.

We marvel at the golden treasure hoard Vindelev. A very excited guide tells us that Odin gets a mention on one of the pieces 300 years before any other written record of him.

Jelling Kirke next door with its two rune stones outside the church door is a lovely whitewashed building surrounded by the most beautiful graveyard. The larger of the two stones has runes on it that appear on Danish passports and is considered Denmarks birth certificate.

We climb both burial mounds for panoramic views.

Off into Jelling for an explore of the town stopping in a supermarket for a nose of what’s on offer and prices.

Failing to find anywhere open for a beer we go back to the van for dinner and a few episodes of Game of Thrones followed by a bad movie set in Poland about a dairy.
A interesting day full of history.

The museum looks super cool! I love it when something as “old” as Viking history is brought to life in such a modern, engaging way 🙂
P.S. Had no idea about Bluetooth — that’s such a fun fact!
