Keil Canal, Schleswig-Holstein

Today we are off to the Keil Canal. It’s 98km long and links the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. We are aiming for a campsite near Rendsburg about 70km south of Denmark. You usually have to arrive early for a spot and as it’s Saturday it’s likely to be busy. We leave just after we get up at around 8:30am as it’s a two and three quarter hour journey.

Keil Canal

It’s almost full on arrival with only three spots left on the back row. We fill our water tank and get ourselves set up. €14 a night with electricity on a meter again.

I spend ages working on my blog which is a slog as I’m struggling to get photos compressed. The software I’m using keeps failing I think because the mobile signal is a bit patchy so it’s a frustrating experience.

Sitting outside the van overlooking the canal it’s hard not to jump up as huge ships pass in front of us laden with containers. It’s a sight to behold.

After lunch in the sunshine with a cold beer and after T squeezes in a nap, we take a walk along the canal. There’s quite a few cyclists and the odd fisherman. Just up to our right there’s a couple of ferries at Nobiskrug, that literally cross back and forth over the canal.

We watch the ferries close up as they shuttle back and forth. It’s a well oiled machine.

On we wander up to where the canal branches and sit and watch the world go by for a while.

Back nearer the van we stop at a restaurant the Strandbar NOK. Enquiring about the ferries we find out they run 24hrs at various frequencies and they’re free! They fill up with cars and then cross the river and back again in sync.

We sit outside in unusual lounge seats with pull out leg rests and strange but useful cup holders in a beach like sandy area. Our plan to eat in the van is postponed as we are too comfy to move and the food is cheap.

On our return we stay outside reading and I continue fighting with my blog. I have another fight with our internet hotspot too but eventually work that out and get it going. T wants to watch the European champions league final but he can’t find a free version so has to put with score updates.

Once the sun goes down we go inside and continue to watch the first season of Game of Thrones. Ned Stark is definitely in trouble!
