Llyn Tegid / Bala Lake

Travelling again today to North Wales, for our last trip of 2024 in Luci.

First stop is Bala Lake or Llyn Tegid in Gwynedd, a 6km long and 0.8km wide freshwater glacial lake in North Wales. It’s fed by the River Dee.

We arrive at Pen Y Bont campsite on the north east corner of the lake at 2pm. It’s very empty so I don’t think we needed to book in advance. After a quick lunch we wander out to have a look around the lake and town. It’s drizzling and very cold so we wrap up well for the walk.

The lake is incredibly full with trees near the waters edge standing in a couple of feet of water. No surprise considering the recent storm and heavy rains. The skies are grey and overcast with the odd shaft of blue poking through.

We walk into Bala and wander up one side of the High St and then down the other. Obviously we have to try the local pubs so we enjoy a drink in The Goat / Yr Afr, The Old Bulls Head and The White Lion Royal Hotel. All are very quiet and only one serves real ale.

Back to the van to enjoy Duck à l’orange a la Aldi and a dose of Netflix. A good start to our trip.
