Full Irish breakfast sitting outside to start our day. It’s a bit grey and overcast but warm enough. A leisurely start as it’s late morning.

Eventually around 2:45 pm we wander out for an explore of Castlerock. We are tempted by ice creams as we near the beach, the first of the holiday. Absolutely delicious if a little runny so need concentration to eat without too much dripping. I get salted caramel and T enjoys rum and raisin.

Onto the beach which is overrun with school children. It’s a whole primary school’s day out at the seaside and they are spread out in groups over the beachfront having fun and making noise.

We wander left and are soon out of sight and on a deserted stretch of beach. The tide is coming in strong so very soon after a while we have to turn back and make our way off the beach up some steps. We pop into a local church for a couple of minutes.

Further along the promenade up to the end of the village we see the start of a huge static caravan park overlooking the coast.

T continues up a road to find the 12 apostles, a row of cottages we’d heard about, whilst I wander along the coastal path in front of the caravan park.

I think the trail has the potential for us to get a look at the Mussendum Temple, a building built on the headland, perched right on the cliff edge at Downhill Demesne. It was built in around 1783 and housed a library.
T joins me and we keep walking until happily we hit a viewpoint with views of the temple, the ruins of Downhill House a mansion built in the late 18th century for Frederick, 4th Earl of Bristol and also see the trainline cutting through the coast. The views both ways are fab.

Back to the village, we have a pint in Bertha’s before heading back to the motorhome. We pop out at 9:51 pm to enjoy the solstice before watching a little Marcella series 2 to end our day.

A quiet relaxing and enjoyable day.
