Cushendall

A very short hop along the Causeway Coast to Cushendall for our next stop.

We are free camping again this time just offroad in a large layby close to the beach and opposite the golf club at the end of a cul-de-sac. There’s plenty of room when we arrive early afternoon with a few cars and no motorhomes but now at 17:20 its mostly vans and just a few cars.

On arrival we wander along the beach promenade which is literally over the road and walk along the coastal path. The sun is shining and it’s a little chilly with the sea breeze but really quite gorgeous. Behind us is a volcanic plug called Lurigethan, a small flat topped hill.

Up from the beach we make our way into the village and suss out the local pubs and sights and visit the tourist information office. It’s a hurling mad place with a couple of huge murals on the side of buildings and lots of photos and memorabilia around the place. Curfew Tower built on the corner of the main high street was built in 1817 to house ‘riotous prisoners’ and is now a private residence.

We enjoy a swift half in the garden of Johnny Joe’s and then another in Harry’s, before a visit to the Spar for essentials. Finally pick up some cash too.

Wandering back to the van along the River Dall for a short while, I make some sandwiches which we take back to the beach for a seaside picnic washed down with a passion fruit cocktail. A lovely spot for a late lunch.

T then goes on a wander to see the ruins of Layd church and graveyard. However the graveyard is still in use and his return journey is via the lovely coast road.

Around six we walk back into the village, via the beach again of course. A drink in the Lurig Bar overlooking the River Dall and a second half in the McMullan’s Central bar before heading to Harry’s for dinner. Lovely food and generous portions but lacking in atmosphere.

A little pub crawl back to Jonny Joe’s, enjoying the art hung around the bar, then McMullan’s and finally the Lurig Bar which all have music playing and are very busy.

Back at the van it’s a cuppa and then bed.

Another good day with a hint of craic.
