Glenariff Forest Park

It’s still raining as we wake up but forecast is for dryer weather at lunchtime, fingers crossed.

After getting ready to go we have to wait out a rain shower for ten minutes but then we’re off. From the campsite we walk via the cafe towards a viewpoint which has amazing views down the valley. Blue sky is appearing so we’re hopeful that we’ll stay dry.

We decide on The Waterfall walk trail which promises, waterfalls, forest, stairways, pathways cut into the near vertical sides of the gorge and boardwalks on stilts in the Glenariff river. A spectacular walk. It delivers!

Partway down the gorge we add in an optional detour to the rainbow bridge. By now the sun is shining, the sunglasses are on and eventually it’s warm enough to walk in a T shirt.

Down the stairs onto the boardwalk and walking along the river it reminds us of New Zealand. It’s incredibly lush and green with ferns everywhere. Waterfalls are fab and in full flow, the water running an orangey brown colour we assume is from the peat. It really is beautiful. Luckily all the key highlights on the walk we get to enjoy on our own, so peaceful and glorious.

At the end of the boardwalks, to our delight we find a pub and enjoy a pint inside. Unbelievably it’s started raining now but luckily by the time we are moving on again the rain has passed.

The final waterfall just over the bridge from the pub is spectacular. Absolutely bursting with water. The photo on the park brochure is of this waterfall but it’s looking much more splendid today.

The walk back up to the campsite along a forest road is long and uphill and a bit boring but absolutely worth it to complete this fabulous circular walk.

Back at the site after a bit of lunch we do some laundry as they have a drying room. We  enjoy lovely hot showers before getting in our comfies. Sun is still shining too.

A tasty dinner cooked in the van during which we have a moment where we are midged to death by thousands of the blighters sitting on the fly mesh across the door and on shutting the door quite a lot of them get in!

Sadly the Euros have started today so we eat whilst watching Scotland getting a pasting from Germany in the opening match.

A cracker of a day!
