Stonehenge and Salisbury

Today we leave lovely Cirencester and head off to Stonehenge. T has been here before back in his college days when you could get right up into the stones. As a family we  nearly visited but instead just peered through a wire fence from a distance and then visited the Avebury stones instead for free.

We are prepared to pay this time and plan on joining English Heritage but happily discover we can get in free with our national trust cards. The car park is huge with a dedicated area for caravans and motorhomes which is almost empty. A shuttle bus runs from the visitors centre to the stones along a very uninteresting road.

We walk the circular route around the stones according to English Heritage in the footsteps of our neolithic ancestors.  It’s busy but not overrun. The route is close to the monument on one side so you get a good look at them.

Back at the visitors centre we buy the must have fridge magnet before heading off to Salisbury.

We are staying at the Salisbury Camping and caravanning club site this time. A bit cheaper at just over £60 for two nights. The site is next to Old Sarum the location of the first town and Cathedral. Free WiFi too so we can get Netflix up and running on our firestick.

We wander into Salisbury around 7ish. It’s about a 30 minute walk including some dodgy underpasses to get across a huge roundabout.

The George and Dragon is our first stop which has a band on that morphs into karaoke as we are leaving. Atmosphere is good. We have a second drink in Quodos which is opposite of lively. Another in the livelier Royal George before heading back to the George and Dragon again where the karaoke is still going strong. Manage with the help of the barman to get a taxi back to the van and avoid the underpasses in the dark.

A 14k step day.
