Wissant, Calais, Dover and then home

Last night in France which we are spending in Wissant which is half an hour from Calais. It’s a free aire just ten minutes walk from the beach front.

On the way from Les Andelys we do our final supermarket shop, mainly so T could buy even more bottles of red wine to add to the many bottles he’s already bought!

It’s raining heavily of course when we arrive so we eat lunch again in the van. Tony reads an article that says Wissant is in the top 20 seaside resorts in France! The rain lifts a bit even though it’s forecast all evening, so at 6pm we take a chance and wander into the village.

It’s bigger than we thought. Lots of hotels, b&b’s and a few bars and cafés. The weather on the promenade is wild with a few mad kite and wind surfers enjoying the waves.

The rain starts again so we leg it to an bar and enjoy our last pint of the holiday.

Dinner in the van and an early-ish night as we are away at 7:30am tomorrow. By now the aire has filled up but there’s still people arriving in the dark until late.

P&O ferry home which is absolutely packed with lorries as well as tourists which is surprising as it’s Sunday.

Once in Dover we fill up with diesel and then get on our way. One quick stop on the M25 to get something to eat, a 15 minute delay on the M6 when the police shut the motorway for some unknown reason and then we are home at 6:15pm! 1,465 miles and 38.5 hrs of driving.

It’s been a good holiday but the weather has been very disappointing. We had fantastic weather for five weeks last year so we were spoilt! Really couldn’t sit out much in the evening this time and I think we only had three BBQs in three weeks. There’s always next time……
