A late start to our day, I think we are all feeling a little knackered. It’s also the final day of our interail adventure as we fly home tomorrow.
We decide to visit the children’s railway so it’s a tram and bus ride to get there. The narrow gauge railway started back in the late 1940’s. It’s in the hills of Budapest. All the jobs on the railway except driving the trains are done by kids between 10 and 14. They apply and if accepted get four months training and then basically do a shift 1-2 times a month. They get to experience all the different roles required eg. ticket sales, guards, ticket collectors, signals, admin etc. It’s prestigious and all the children we saw were keen and seemed proud of what they were doing. The train is basically a 50 minute ride through a forest with a few stops at which there are walking trails and places to visit. We did the non stop version.

At the end we enjoyed a drink and a bowl of soup at a local restaurant before taking the cog railway back down the hill into town. We walk through a park to the metro station and take the metro back to the apartment. The escalators are incredibly steep and long!

On the way Bev and I sort out a restaurant for the evening. The original choice is fully booked but we find another one close by that has a good Hungarian menu and great reviews.

Before our final meal we go for a drink accidentally in different ‘ruin’ bars as I gave out the wrong directions to the guys. We eventually meet up though. These bars are located in rundown buildings which are rescued and the ruin used to create a quirky and unique space. Jacky does a ‘takeaway’ wine spritzer in a bottle as we are late for our meal.

The restaurant which is only two doors away isn’t too busy and the food is excellent. A great way to end our adventure.

Leaving the Budapest flat at 7am we finally get home at 4:30pm, the Tonbridge lot at 5:30pm and the Eynsford lot at 6:30pm all having experienced delays at some point. Me and T did enjoy a pint in the sun though whilst waiting for our taxi from Burscough!
It’s been a blast.

Oh nooo!! I don’t want your adventures to end! Have loved all the photos and diary entries. Better than Portillo!! Xxx
